School Field Trip

Grade 4

Incoming 9.5 - 10.5 year old

The 10-year-old child is finding stability and strength as an individual yet working harmoniously together with their peers. Having passed through the nine-year-change, the child is ready for more concrete tasks and more readily recognizes their place in the world.

A child in this stage feels very much separate from any of the security and comforts that previously were supportive. Every possible opportunity is given to meet these new challenges in quite unexpected ways, ways in which the child can have the experience of crossing and, at the same time being led towards a wholesome resolution.

Here are just some of the activities that make up the daily rhythm of grade 4:

  • Spelling, Reading, writing (cursive continues)

  • Grammar

  • Composition writing through personal narratives

  • Tall Tales

  • Local Geography

  • Local Native American studies

  • Local History/Industry

  • Zoology: comparative study of human being and other animals

  • Cultural Studies: Norse mythology

  • Mathematics: Introduction to Fractions

  • Drama

  • Form drawing: Celtic knots

  • Singing: singing two-part songs

  • Introduction to string instruments

  • Handwork: Embroidery, Cross Stitch, Macrame

  • Painting

  • Foreign Language

  • Class Play

The child at this age tends to be more self aware, and thus is ready to take up greater challenges on the academic front: They are entering the “heart of childhood”. They’re feeling confident, independent and eager to take on new challenges. They have transitioned out of early childhood and feel ready to dive into a vibrant, inspiring curriculum.
